Container Ship Ever Given Now Infamous for Getting Stuck in the Suez Canal Resumes Journey

Ever Given, the now infamous container ship that spent nearly a week lodged between the walls of the Suez Canal in Egypt, has resumed its journey down the canal 106 days after the March 23, 2021 incident first occurred. Once the ship became dislodged on March 29, it was held by the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) under court order while the SCA sought compensation claims from the ship’s owner, Shoei Kisen and its insurers. The SCA originally asked for more than $900M in compensation for the salvage operation that freed the ship but later dropped the amount to $550 million. Shoei Kisen and its insurers dispute its detention and the compensation claim. The authority and the ship’s owner and insurers eventually settled on an undisclosed amount, allowing the SCA to release the ship. Learn more here.
