A recent change to CDC guidelines states N95 masks are prioritized for healthcare workers but are permitted as bulk sales to other employers whose employees work closely together with others. The N95 masks are considered a “respirator” under OSHA’s respiratory protection standard and require specific training, fit testing, cleaning and oversight even for employees who wear the N95 voluntarily. However, federal and state OSHA regulators have issued citations to employers outside the healthcare industry who have failed to comply with respiratory protection standards in connection with COVID-19 inspections.
