How GEICO’s Failure to Settle for $30K Turned into a $2.7M Judgement

Bonnie Winslett was driving a friend’s vehicle in February 2012 when she struck Terry Guthrie’s bicycle resulting in back and neck injuries. The vehicle owner’s insurance, GEICO, informed Winslett in writing that she was covered by the policy. Guthrie’s attorneys demanded a settlement with GEICO for the $30,000 policy limit. GEICO countered with a much lower offer. The attorney then filed suit. Winslett did not respond to the suit nor did she forward information about the suit to GEICO. The court found in favor of Guthrie awarding him more than $2.9 million. The case eventually found its way back to GEICO who was held liable for 70% of the default judgment.
