Notable Exceptions in COVID-19 Business Interruption, Civil Authority Cases

More than 800 lawsuits against commercial insurers have been filed since COVID-19 shut down much of the US economy in March 2020. In most of these cases, businesses filed claims under the “business interruption” or “civil authority” provisions in their business insurance policies. The majority of the cases have been decided in favor of insurance companies. A relatively small number of cases have been notable exceptions.
