Water Damage Overtakes Arson as Popular Method of Insurance Fraud

During the Property Liability Resource Bureau’s annual conference, insurers heard from attorneys about the latest insurance fraud scam: water damage. In the past, arson has been the most common way of defrauding insurers. Fraudsters have now turned to water damage. An undetected leak doesn’t attract the attention of bystanders nor does it come with the inherent dangers of setting a fire. Purposeful water leaks can also be controlled in ways arson cannot. The conference also discussed the increasing use of appraisals as a way to determine loss. A claims examiner encouraged insurers to give instructions to their appraisers in order to produce more accurate appraisals. https://www.claimsjournal.com/news/national/2022/04/05/309647.htm
